The Do’s and Don’ts of Using Surveillance Cameras

Surveillance cameras are important security equipment that many use to keep an eye on their property, whether commercial or personal. These tiny equipment secure areas from any and all kinds of intrusions and are helpful for reviewing what actually went down in a certain timeframe. But there are certain do’s and don’ts that are involved with using surveillance cameras as well. Here are the most common do’s and don’ts of using a surveillance camera:

  1. Do Buy a Branded Company’s Surveillance Camera:

If you think going for a cheaper surveillance camera would be a wise choice, then you are wrong. Surveillance cameras are really sophisticated technology and only trained and skilled officials like Hikvision Chinese setup should be trusted with developing and assembling them. Therefore, the wisest choice would be to go for branded companies rather than the ones that are just starting out as experience does count in the field of security.

  1. Don’t Put Your Surveillance Cameras on a Common Network:

A common standard network is prone to cyber breaches from any hacker’s end. Therefore, you should ensure that your camera isn’t on the standard network or else your entire surveillance network would be prone to hacks as well. To protect your surveillance network from hacks, either use a separate network for the surveillance cameras or use VLAN for the cameras.

  1. Do Change the Default Password of the Camera Network:

This is one of the most common things people forget to do. You should always change the default password because it is easy to guess and available on the internet. Instead of using obvious passwords like “123456”, “Password” etc., you should use something that is a combination of special symbols, small letters, capital letters and numbers. This makes it hard to guess or apply brute force attack.

  1. Do Update Your Firmware Regularly:

Updating a surveillance camera’s firmware might seem like a mundane task, but in reality this task can actually increase your camera’s efficiency and life. A firmware update also brings in new features and optimizations for your camera. This makes your camera faster and better in terms of performance and recording ability. Therefore, always make it a point to update your firmware the moment it is released as some firmware updates also have security patches for vulnerabilities without which your system would stay vulnerable as well.

  1. Don’t Open Up the Hull of the Camera That Says “Warranty Void If Opened”:

Only authorized personnel should be allowed to open up the camera hull as the internal wiring of the surveillance camera is really intricate and a slight misplacement would render the entire network useless. Therefore, never open the hull of the camera even if you think you know what you are doing. Each camera system is different and letting a technician handle any camera problem is the best way to go.

Follow these dos and don’ts and you won’t be in a serious problem while using a surveillance camera.
